Earth Hour and Nyepi Days

This action is a part of the Earth Hour program that was published by environment organization of World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and involving all of the society for the campaign in global climate change.

About the Earth Hour campaign we must shut down all the electricity for about 60 minutes or 1 hour, we hope for this campaign to be our image in the next day. Not just for 1 day event but the other day also and it will be a long term program. Jakarta will be a Sustainable City if the societies do this program successfully.

The one day Earth Hour activity is a symbolic action. The most important factor of deciding the successful of protecting Earth Hour in climate change is changing life style of energy saving for a long term not only in Jakarta but the entire big city in Indonesia.

Shutting down the lamps and Electronic tools action for 1 hour in Saturday, 28 March 2009 from 20.30 – 21.30 saving electricity uses in Jakarta for about 300 Mw. It’s a big saving right. 300Mw can reduce the cost of electricity for about Rp200 million, reducing CO2 emission about 284 tons and this saving can produce O2 for 528 people… From this data we must work together to make this world to be a better place for our children. This country is getting worse each year. Lots of disasters have wiped us all out. The society must soon realized about this tragedy and make a changing of life style in energy saving. Lots of this disaster came from the Global Warming cause.

2 days before the Earth Hour in 26 March 2009 I celebrated the Nyepi days. At Nyepi days we are forbidden to:
1. Ignite fire (Amati Gni)
2. Go out (Amati Lelungan)
3. Enjoying entertainment (Amati Lelanguan)
4. Take a work (Amati Karya)


All the lights have to be switching off at Nyepi days and the electronic tools also. We must shut down all the electricity because it can ignite fires also.... Our Religion is forbidden to take a walk outside the house or hangout and fine some amusement park or anything else, this second forbidden thing have a connection too with the third that is enjoying entertainment or Amati Lelungan and the last one is forbidden to take a work or Amati Karya.

I explain about the Nyepi days because it so useful for the prevention of the Global Warming. In Bali the society were saving about 20.000 tons of CO2 emissions. Just imagine that, This number is way much more than the Earth Hour In Jakarta yesterday that was only 284 tons of CO2 emissions. If we viewed it from the time point of view of course its very different 1 hour in Earth Hour and 24 hour or 1 day in Nyepi. Besides that the second forbidden thing of Nyepi its says that we cannot go out to take a walk or hangout with friends and this makes more saving of CO2 because there is no car or other transports.

The Earth Hour yesterday at 28 March 2009 I think it is also very much of help to our society and not only in just the island in Bali but all over the world. But I still see some of the people utilize this opportunities to take a walk and hangout with friends beside just stay at home and it makes no different because the CO2 emissions from the car or other transportation's. Besides that when the Earth Hour finishes people switch all of the electricity on directly.

I have a suggestion for the Earth Hour can follow like the Hindu believes in Nyepi to prevent the Global Warming to get worse. So that the people do not have to go out to take a walk or hanging out during the Earth Hour day is still in progress. Although its just 1 hour but it is very much of help for the Global Warming prevention or maybe we can do it for about 24 hour it is way much better if we do it. I think we can do it for this Country to be save and erase the disasters that have occur in Indonesia like tsunami and other things.

Besides we shut down all of the electricity we also can erase the illegal cutting of a tree for the needs of business organization or personal wealth. Because it can reduce the CO2 absorbing.

approximately, the damage cost of the world is up to 300 billion US dollar every year because of the climate change and reduction the ability of trees to absorb the CO2 (carbon sink), to overcome this effect of Global Warming for upcoming 50 years later for about 300 billion US dollar accordance to Nelly Gustian in Harian Analisa.

But all of this is up to yourself that can change it. I overcome we do not have to do it just in the Earth Hour day, but we can do it besides 28 March. The living of Indonesian people is in your hands!. C’mon don’t make any disasters again for this world.. ^^ that’s all from me thank you.
